14 Awesome Movies Every Couple Should Watch

Movie night is one of the best stay-in dates. The internet has made instant viewing easy and accessible. No longer do we schlep to the rental store or big vending machine to pick a movie. Instead, we click on the television to download movies from Vudu, Blockbuster On Demand, Apple TV, and Amazon. The convenience of downloading movies encourages a cozy movie night at home. These 14 awesome movies are classics every couple will enjoy.

14 Awesome Movies

romantic couple

Romance

The Notebook | A beautiful love story about two lovers torn apart and brought back together. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling are the subjects of an old notebook documenting their winding path back to each other. Perhaps one of the best romance movies of all time.

Titanic | This movie has almost everything. It has action, drama, intrigue, romance, tragedy, and history. This epic is beautiful to watch. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet sail on the Titanic’s fated first voyage. The differences in social class do not stop either from falling in love, risking everything for each other, and, in the end, sacrificing. Beautiful, an epic account of the voyage.

How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days | Comedy and romance are great partners. This silly movie is not supposed to replicate the realities of dating. Rather it is a fun and silly take on the world of dating. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are players in secret competitions. Hudson tries to prove she can get rid of an interested male in 10 days. McConaughey, on the other hand, tries to prove he can make any woman fall in love with him in two weeks. I laugh every time at the ridiculous attempts to woo and repeal each other. Sometimes simple fun is the best.

Action

Star Wars Trilogy (original trilogy – Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi) | If you are as old as me, you saw the first Star Wars movie in theaters. If not, you’ve grown up loving each part of the Star Wars tale. The tale of good vs. evil never gets old. Couple that with the roguish humor of Han Solo and the cute R2-D2 and it’s a contender. These movies never grow old and continue to be one of my favorite trilogies.

The Bourne Identity Series | Such an amazing series of movies. Each one holds its own. The non-stop action and mind-blowing intrigue make these movies worth of the list. Add Matt Damon’s fantastic acting and this series get five stars. Damon is an amnesiac who quickly discovers his past as a spy and assassin. His past puts him in danger and he must enforced to enlist the help of a German woman. The perfect amount of mystery and action to please every viewer.

Thriller / Fantasy

The Silence of the Lambs | Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins at their best. This psychological thriller never gets old or less terrifying. Foster’s character develops a twisted relationship with serial killer Hopkins. The Silence of the Lambs is a great movie to snuggle up to your spouse and feel protected.

Jaws | No list is complete without this movie. A classic thriller, Jaws is an amazing watch. The music alone gives you goosebumps. I still scream during this movie.

Lord of the Rings Series | Based on the book series by J.R.R. Tolkien. The movies follow Bilbo Baggins (Elijah Woods) and friends on their harrowing journey to Mount Doom. They must return “the ring” to the center of evil for its destruction. The group meets with many foes and allies along the way. The story focuses on the struggles between good and evil and their powers over the living. Prepare for lots of breaks. Each movie is fairly long but well worth it.

Drama

Forrest Gump | “Run, Forrest, run!” Perhaps one of the most repeated lines in movie history. Forrest Gump is one of those movies you just fall in love with. He is a gentle, innocent man who lives an incredible life. He represents the pure, innocence we all want as we venture through life. Forrest’s wisdom and perception throughout the movie are inspiring. This is an absolute must-see-again movie.

Schindler’s List |Liam Neeson plays Oskar Schindler, a businessman during World War II. Schindler is an opportunist who recognizes a way to increase his wealth during the war. He uses unpaid Jewish prisoners for labor in his factories. The true story continues as Schindler discovers his conscience and humanity. It is a heartbreaking story; a reminder of the horrors of World War II, hatred, and the power to create change.

Legends of the Fall | Set in majestic Montana prior to World War I. The saga follows ranch patriarch (Anthony Hopkins) and his three sons. Their lives are dramatically and irrevocably changed during the war. As they try to rebuild their lives, they struggle to find themselves again. The story has a breadth of emotion and transformation for the characters. It is a beautiful movie and one of my favorites.

A River Runs Through It | Another Brad Pitt period movie but I promise you will love it. Based on Norman McLean’s novel about his childhood in Montana. The movie follows his relationship with his father, brother, and the art of fly fishing. The brothers are quite different in personality and goals. Norman (Craig Sheffer) is more academic and studious with dreams of becoming a professor. Paul (Brad Pitt), on the other hand, is an alcoholic and gambler, whose only goal is to enjoy life. The movie weaves a tale of brotherly bonds, tragedy, and finding peace. If you man loves fishing, especially fly fishing, he will be “hooked” on this movie!

Western Horse

Westerns

Unforgiven | By far one of my favorite Clint Eastwood movies. Unforgiven has a sophistication that earlier Eastwood westerns did not have. He again plays a Western gunslinger, however, he has “retired” to ranching. Called back to action by the plea of a group of women, Muny seeks justice for the wrongs suffered. Once again, Eastwood delivers an impactful character. Unforgiven demonstrates the crazy and unchaperoned justice of the West.

Tombstone | This is my husband’s favorite movie. “I’m here, Huckleberry.” has been quoted by my husband so often I can hear it in my head. Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer are amazing as Wyatt Earp and his best pal, Doc Holliday. Follow Earp, his brothers, and Holliday as they establish law and order in Tombstone. Like Legends of the Fall, Tombstone is epic. Not to be confused with factual history, the movie definitely takes creative license. Yet, the result is a western that stands the test of time.

Few things are as relaxing and enjoyable as a movie at home with your partner. Curl up on the couch with popcorn, maybe some wine, and snuggle up for a great evening together.

What movies do you love to watch with your spouse?
