The weekend is a time for relaxing, unwinding, and fun. We want to enjoy a laid back weekend. Sounds like a great plan. Unfortunately, many people think relaxing and laid back includes dressing the part too.
The work week is over and we seek comfort. We want to put on yoga pants, t-shirts, and flip-flops. We fail to recognize that yoga pants are pants. T-shirts are shirts. And flip flops are shoes. So, we are already doing what we are trying to avoid. Putting on any pair of pants takes the same amount of time. Why not choose a great pair of pants than workout wear?
Since we must get dressed anyway, why not select weekend wear that isn’t meant for a workout? There are many different options that are stylish, comfortable, practical, and easy to wear. Leave the yoga pants for a yoga class or those mornings you are running late for school drop off.
I read a quote from stylist Stacy London that resonates with me.
Style is joyful if you allow yourself to have joy.
That quote has stayed with me for many years. So much so that when I try to reach of my yoga pants, I hear Stacy London’s voice in my head telling me to put on real pants and feel joy. Joy in fashion is knowing your look great and feeling confident in your clothes. Here are the best secrets to fantastic weekend wear.WEEKEND WEAR 101
The weekend is a respite and opportunity to rejuvenate yourself. The weekend also holds many social opportunities. These social events dictate different dressing guidelines. Keep that in mind when selecting your weekend attire.
#1 Pants
Yoga pants are comfortable. But they are not meant to replace pants. I adore this video about yoga pants. The comic Tim Hawkins, sings the truth about yoga pants. But there are other options available that are equally comfortable and definitely more fashionable.
Consider denim, color denim, and cotton bottoms. Jeans are classic and always look great.
The secret to great jeans is to look for a darker wash, not too much distressing, and fit is everything. The darker wash elongates the leg making you look taller. Find the best fit possible. You may need to spend time trying on several styles. In the end, finding the perfect fit for your body is most important. Pants come in a large variety of fabrics, finishes, lengths, and styles.
#2 Tops
T-shirts are nice and a wardrobe staple. I love to pair a black or white t-shirt with denim capris pants. Yet, cotton t-shirts are not exclusive in my wardrobe. Look for tops that fit well, flatter your shape, and have interesting colors or patterns.
The secret to this weekend wear is versatility. Look for tops that fit well, have an interesting pattern, and go with more than one bottom.
#3 Dresses
Nothing is easier to slip on than a dress. Maxi dresses are especially comfortable. They have the length of wearing pants with the ease of slipping over your head.
The weekend wear secret here is to consider shape, fit, and length. Avoid anything too short or long for your body. Not every shape works for every body. Try different cuts to find the perfect shilouette for you.
#4 Shorts
Shorts are a summer staple. Take your style up a few notches from cut-offs, though. Focus on a flattering length for the occasion. Boating with friends calls for a different short than brunch with the aunties.
The best weekend wear secret for shorts is consider the occasion. Bermuda shorts are perfect for company bar-be-ques or family gatherings. Something shorter may be the perfect choice for a day at the beach.
#5 Shoes
For many, shoes are the best part of dressing! Shoes are a personal choice. Some women love their heels and will never give them up. While other ladies swear by their sensible albeit ugly shoes. It comes down to comfort, practicality, and style.
For example, high heels are perfect for date night or an evening with friends. Yet, they are impractical for a day at the pool. Sandals are always a great choice. Ballet flats are perfect for pants, shorts, and dresses. While flip-flops are best for an afternoon at the pool.
The weekend wear secret for shoes is comfort. Don’t wear heels to the lake. Don’t wear flip flops to a wedding. During the weekend day, wear something comfortable and functional like ballet flats or pretty sandals. Never subject yourself to misery because your shoe is uncomfortable.
Yoga pants have a place in your life. That place is the gym. For one, I have driven my kids to school after waking up late, in yoga pants. And I have done my shopping and errands in yoga pants. Stacy’s voice always whispers “you could have worn those amazing shorts in your closet!” every time I wear yoga pants.
Dressing a little better doesn’t take more effort. Once you begin to dress thoughtfully on the weekends it will become a habit. You will not grab the yoga pants out of habit. Instead, you will grab that fun maxi dress and sandals. You may put on that lovely cashmere sweater with jeans and ballet flats.
The options are limitless and your friends will beg you for fashion advice!
