This month the Willow House Magazine Book Club is exploring Last Evenings on Earth by Roberto Bolano. A stunning collection of stories digging into the tales of exile.
Last Evenings on Earth by Roberto Bolaño
This collection of short stories, as Bolaño describes, is the “melancholy folklore of exile.” These stories, which are set in the Chilean exile diaspora of Latin America and Europe, are filled with descriptions of writers and their struggles.
Bolaño largely considered himself a beatnik poet turned fiction writer after the birth of his son, and his beat style comes through in his short stories. His words have such rhythm and clarity that suggest he never strayed too far from poetry. The characters in these stories often seem semi-autobiographical; most of them are writers exiled from Chile much like Bolaño was.
Pick up this great collection, it will lend to many a reread!
